How to use face serum (in the evening)

But do you really know what the role of face serum is and how much of the marketing promises are real? Are you correctly using the face serum as part of your evening skin-care routine? Are you making the most of this truly impressive skin-care product?

We will help you figure out these questions; Would you have any question or would you like to share your own experience with us, just leave a comment at the end of the article.

What is a face serum?

Face serum is a light moisturizer that can deliver active ingredients directly into the layers of your skin. The serum molecules are usually smaller than in other cosmetic products, allowing them to penetrate deeper into the skin. Serum is the ideal remedy for specific skin issues such as fine lines and wrinkles. If you want to find out more about using it or how should it be applied on your face, Looca Beauty has you covered: an entire article about face serum with some “Dos & Don’ts” tips.

What is the best serum to use in the evening?

Our body and skin are amazing machineries when it comes to repairing damages and most of the repairing takes place during our sleep. When choosing your night serum, look for ingredients that will boost skin repair such as collagen or anti-inflammatory ingredients. Retinol or other damage-reversing ingredients are great choices for night serums.

Keep in mind that night serums tend to be very concentrated and greasier than day serums and there is no need of applying a sunscreen after using them, compared to the facial serums that are used during the day. Always chose the products that fits your needs and the particularities of your skin.

How to correctly apply face serum in the evening

You might have bought the most expensive serum on the market, if you are not using it correctly, the benefits will fail to show up. This is the reason why building a correct skin-care routine is so important.

We all want to preserve a fresh look and to prevent aging, but the truth being said, this is not an easy task when you have to deal with so many other things during any given day.

Taking care of your skin should become a priority after the age of 30 and building a skin-care routine in the evening should go up high in your “to do list”. A night serum in combination with a cleanser and a moisturizer should be your ‘starter kit’ when creating your skin-care routine. Here are the correct steps for applying face serum. You might as well create an evening ritual out of it:

Step 1: Relax

Start your evening skin-care routine with two minutes of relaxation. Take a step back from tasks, problems that you had to deal with during the day and allow your muscles (including your face muscles) to relax. Try focusing on your breath only for about two minutes.

Step 2: Cleanse and remove makeup from your skin

To insure proper skin penetration, the serum must be applied on a clean face only. Use a cleanser or an exfoliator that is adapted to your type of skin and apply it all over your face. Wash it away after a couple of minutes with warm water and use a towel to dry your face by gently tapping it.

Step 3: Collect a small quantity of the serum in your hand

Being less sticky than creams or moisturizers, serums are often sold in a vial or a jar and a pomp is often provided to help in collecting it. Use the pomp or simply your fingers to collect a few drops of serum.
A minimal quantity should be sufficient since serums are highly concentrated cosmetic products. Do not collect the serum on your fingers as it might easily slip in between them; try to put it instead in the palm of your hand. In this article we will assume you will collect the serum in the palm of your left hand.

Step 4: Apply the night serum by using your fingers.

Always remember that a night serum must be applied with the fingers and not with a cotton pad. The cotton pad will absorb the serum, leaving nothing left to apply on your face.

Assuming you still have the serum in your left palm (you did not drop it, did you?), collect the serum on the top of the fingers of your right hand. Use your right hand to apply the serum evenly on your forehead, under the eyes or on your neck and chin. Gently tap your skin, especially in the areas with more fine lines or wrinkles. The tapping will help the serum penetrate the layers of your skin.

We recommend to apply the serum by tapping your skin from the inside towards the outside of your face. Try to create circular movements as this can facilitate the flow of blood, offering your skin a glowy look.

Step 5: Wait a few minutes

It is very important to allow your skin a few minutes to absorb the serum; we recommend you to wait for around 5 minutes before moving on to the next step.
Getting a bit bored during these five minutes? Remember the purpose is to create a relaxing evening ritual so make the most of these five minutes: start making plans for your next weekend or simply watch a youtube video.

Step 6: Apply a moisturizer.

Once the serum was absorbed into your skin, you can proceed to the last step of the skin-care evening ritual: applying a moisturizer. Although rich in active ingredients, the serum can’t replace a moisturizer as it misses the hydrating properties. In fact it’s role is to enhance the effects of a moisturizer product.

Always remember to pick the a moisturizer that is adapted to your type of skin!

We hope that the above advices help you in creating a relaxing skin-care routine. As at last advice, do not neglect the importance of sleep for a good looking skin.
